What is masturbation?

Masturbation is an act which involves the stimulation of your genital for sexual pleasures, usually to the point of orgasm. It is a very common behaviour even among people who have sexual partners.

It is commonly done by either touching, stroking, or massaging the penis, or clitoris, until an orgasm is reached.

Masturbation can cause your body to release healthy amount of hormones which include dopamine, endorphins, oxytocin, prolactin and testosterone. These hormones positively affect your mood and physical health. Therefore it is regarded as a normal, healthy, sexual activity that is safe, pleasant, fulfilling and acceptable.

What are the side effects of masturbation?

Generally, masturbation do not have harmful side effects, however, some people may feel guilty about masturbation because of their religious, cultural, or social beliefs.

In women with sexual dysfunction, masturbation enhances stimulation, thereby increasing sexual desire and sensitivity.

Conversely, in men, it can decrease sensation.

Masturbating in excess can cause injury like skin chaffing, in severe cases, it could cause pyronie’s disease which is a build-up of plaque in the shaft of the penis due to excess stroking.

Does masturbation cause low sperm count?

No! Frequent masturbation or frequent sex have no effect on your sperm count, neither does it affect your ability to get pregnant.
Sometimes, some men get worried when they notice that if they ejaculate a couple of times in 24 hrs, their semen becomes more watery. Well, the sperm is inexhaustible, the amount and thickness of the semen and sperm that come out is affected by frequency of ejaculation. You will notice improved sperm quantity and thickness after 24 – 48 hrs.

Does masturbation increase the risk of prostate cancer?

Masturbation has nothing to do with prostate cancer.
Masturbation though may not have major side effects on health, it is however considered a problem when:

It interferes with sexual activity with a partner.

It causes significant distress to the person especially when it is done compulsively.

It causes social withdrawal.
